Medication Management Q & A

Does health insurance cover psychiatric medications?

Medication coverage depends on the individual carrier and the patient’s policy. Many insurance companies cover mental health services and prescription medications. The financial team at Premier Psychiatry can assist patients in reviewing their insurance coverage and exploring other options for coverage when necessary. Claims are submitted directly to the patient’s insurance carrier, which means the patient only pays the portion that they’re responsible for at the time of their appointment.

Can new patients have their medications renewed?

Premier Psychiatry must evaluate new patients to get an updated prescription for their medications. This is a major step in the process as it allows Dr. Thapar to get to know the patient and evaluate the safety and efficacy of the patient’s current treatment plan. In some cases, the patient may report undesirable side effects, noncompliance with the treatment plan, or unmanaged symptoms. Minor chnages to the patient's regimen can usually address these issues.

How often do patients need to be seen?

The frequency of appointments depends on the patient’s unique needs. The patient can adequately manage their condition once the right medication and right dose are established, as well as with annual or biannual appointments. However, many patients benefit as much or more from therapy in addition to medication; these patients are often seen weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on their needs. When patients start new medications, more frequent appointments allow the patient and doctor to evaluate the medication for efficacy and safety and adjust the dose until the patients achieves the desired result.

What can patients do if they don’t like the way their medication makes them feel?

Patients should communicate openly with their doctor regarding the effects of the medications they take, whether positive or negative. Dr. Thapar and the experts at Premier Psychiatry understand how difficult it can be to take medications that produce undesirable side effects. It's their goal to ensure each patient’s treatment plan is not only tolerable but beneficial. They work with each patient until they can find the right combination of therapy, lifestyle changes, and medications to promote optimal wellness.
